Ashen
ASHENDECK: Cinders of the Last Firekeeper is a side-scrolling summoner platformer with roguelike progression and metroidvania exploration. You are the last firekeeper — a hooded child carrying the only remaining warmth in a frozen world. You don't fight. You bind.
THE LOOP
🗡️ Explore — Platform through hand-crafted rooms across 9 floors of the Nine Cold Hells, each with its own palette and atmosphere.
💜 Bind — Weaken an enemy to below half HP, then press C to bind it into your lantern (costs Memory). That enemy is now yours.
✺ Summon — Press Z to call your bound creature into battle. It fights alongside you with its own AI — fire imlobs lob projectiles, glass pups dash-bite, ash wisps slow enemies.
🔥 Survive — Your Fire meter drains constantly. Active summons drain it faster. At zero, you take damage. Collect embers from kills to refill.
💀 Inherit — When you die, choose one bound summon to pass to your next firekeeper. The next run starts with it pre-equipped.
FEATURES
- 9 Floors — Ashfall, Glass Forest, Drowned Library, Iron Necropolis, Ember Vault, Frozen Throne, and 3 boss floors. Each floor has its own color theme, enemies, and atmosphere.
- 3 Bosses — The First Cold (summons minions, drains your fire), The Mute Bishop (silences your summons, triple-shot), and The Heart of Cold (spiral frostbolts, two phases, 350 HP).
- 19 Enemy Types — Each with unique AI, sprites, and behavior. Ash Pilgrims drift, Glass Wolves charge, Frost Wraiths shoot, Iron Saints have damage-reducing wards, and more.
- 4 Summons to Collect — Kindling Imp (ranged fire), Glass Pup (melee dash), Ash Wisp (slow aura), Iron Sprout (heavy turret).
- The Forge — Spend earned embers on 9 permanent upgrades that persist across runs: max HP, max Fire, fire drain reduction, attack damage, summon damage, extra memory, extra summon slot, and more.
- Suit Synergy System — Active summons combine into elemental combos: Steam (Ember+Frost = +25% damage), Pyre (Ember+Ash = fire regen), Cold Soul (Frost+Ash = stronger slow). The fire bar changes color to match your active combo.
- Perk Shrines — Every 3rd room, choose 1 of 3 random blessings or rest to fully heal.
- Juice — Squash & stretch on every action, hit-stop on impacts, screen flash on major events, slow-mo on boss kills, combo multipliers, after-images on dash, particle bursts on every kill.
- Daily Login Embers — Return each day for bonus embers to spend in The Forge.
- Hand-drawn Cartoon Art — Every sprite hand-drawn with thick outlines, cel shading, bright saturated palette, and bouncy animations.

DEVELOPER NOTES
Ashendeck was designed around one question: what if you couldn't fight, but you could make friends with the things trying to kill you? The binding mechanic creates a tension that traditional action platformers don't have — every enemy is a potential ally, but only if you can weaken it without killing it. Combine that with a Fire meter that punishes you for keeping summons active too long, and you get a loop where every decision matters.
The cartoon art style is intentional — the world is grim (the sun went out, everyone is dead, you're the last warmth), but the visuals are warm and bouncy to make the gameplay feel hopeful. Think Hollow Knight meets Pokemon meets Stardew Valley drawn by a sad monk.
